First, we divide all fiber transceivers by datarate, i.e. 10G, 4G, 2G, 1.25G and 155m. Last two are widely used for Gigabit Ethernet and Fast Ethernet applications. So, for example if you have 100 Mbit/s Fast Ethernet SFP socket (slot), then 155M is a right choice, same as for STM-1 as well.

Finally, you can choose more specific details such as type of transceiver - for 10G it is SFP+ or XFP, fiber type and distance - Single Mode, Multimode, or WDM, or CDWM/DWDM, and wavelenghts.
