Connectors and Fiber Media Converters

Every type of transmission media requires connectors at the both ends of the wire before it could be connected to the network device. Different media types require different connectors which affect network installation and maintenance costs as well as possibility to add new segments to the network.
Although each media type has specific connector, it is not problematic to have different media types in one network. Most of the network equipment is designed to be able to work with multiple types of media. Good example is a media converter – network equipment that makes possible signal transmission between different types of media. Some of the media converters are even allowing interconnection between fiber-optic cable and the copper (twisted-pair) cable. It converts the light wave signals from the fiber-optic cable to the electrical signals that are acceptable by the copper cable. The example of FiberBit fiber media converter is in Figure 1.
