What is DDNS (Dynamic DNS) and what it is used for? DNS is used for host location and can be used effectively for that purpose, when the IP is of the host is relatively constant (static). However, nowadays, due to impossibility to assign static IP for every device in the network, most users are using dynamic IP subscription from their network provider. For most of the user that use internet for surfing web and checking emails it does not matter if the IP is changing periodically. However if user wants to host a web-site, he/she would be required to change DNS record every time when IP address has changed. It is very impractical and mostly unmanageable.

Problem can be solved with the help of DDNS (Dynamic DNS). It as an automated software that notifies server provider of the user’s IP change by constantly monitoring user’s computer. This software is installed on clients machine and usually comes with small subscription fee. Whenever provider receives notification from the client that IP has changed, it automatically updates clients DNS and notifies rest of the network, which makes clients machine accessible within minutes over the Internet.

However, DDNS creates a couple minute delay for web-site accessibility, since it takes time to populate networks with new DNS information. This is the reason why large organisations would choose more pricy static IP address, with close to none downtime. Although, DDNS is used by home or small office users.
